Transition to Home Learning
Home Learning
Please use this section of the website to learn about our online learning provision. Please view the student and parent guides below that will explain things in greater detail. The main points regarding our online provision for remote learning are as follows:
Y7-13:Students will receive, as a minimum, enhanced remote learning (live lessons) for 100% of their timetabled lessons (PE, Citizenship and wider world (Y9 only) will not be live). Students should access the live lessons by logging into Microsoft Teams and clicking on their calendar – here they will see all of their scheduled live lessons and can click on the lesson to join it at the scheduled time. For the times that are not live, students will find standard remote learning lessons via OneDrive – these lessons can be found using the year group links to the left of this text.
Note: Please note that where there is staff absence, standard remote learning (via OneDrive) will be set, rather than a live lesson.
Attendance will be taken at each live lesson, the parents/carers of any students that do not attend, or do not behave appropriately during a live lesson, will be contacted by a member of our support team.
School Devices – We received 105 devices from the government to support disadvantaged students with online learning and these have now been allocated to students. We know that this does not cover every student that is in need and we have petitioned the government for more devices to support our students with their studies. We have set up a waiting list and we are trying all other options to support our students. Devices are allocated in a priority order: Must be in receipt of the pupil premium > in exam year groups (Y11 and Y13) > in next year groups in line (Y10 and Y12) > individual assessment of level of need within a household.
Lesson timings – to ensure that lesson match with the staggered lessons taking place in school for key worker/vulnerable students, we are following the timings below – this mainly affects period 3 and period 5, for staggered break and lunch times.

Information for parents
To help parents understand the the different levels of home learning and what you can expect from school, we’ve put together the following guide that will take you through our remote learning strategy and what it all means.
In the student section (below) you will find guides for students (video and PDF) that show you how to install and use Microsoft Teams – our software for the delivery of live lessons. Each student is also entitled to access and download the full suite of Microsoft office products (words, excel etc). For more information, go to this page… https://www.ralphthoresby.co.uk/software-access/
In Teams, classes are listed as a class code, e.g. 11R3Sc = Year 11, group R3, subject Science. A full list of subject codes can be found in the student section below…
Live lessons are recorded for safeguarding purposes, as part of our e-safety policy – should an issue arise in a live lesson, the recording would be accessed so that the lesson can be reviewed.
Information for students
If you’ve been asked to self-isolate, you will still have access to your school work. Your work will be available on OneDrive. You need access to your school email account in order to access the work.
If you need technical support with remote learning, or with using your school device, or if you need to reset your password, please email [email protected]
If your teachers have scheduled live lessons (Tier 2-4), then you will need access to Microsoft Teams. Below, you will find some guides and videos on downloading and using Teams:
Finding work and submitting work in Teams
You can access your OneDrive lesson folders by clicking the link below:
You should stick to your timetable and complete the work during the correct time. You should send any completed work to your class teacher during your live lesson, or via email. Teacher email addresses are further down.
Alternative Remote Learning Access
You can access remote learning (OneDrive and Teams) through an XBOX or PlayStation. Te guide below shows how this can be achieved. Mr Richardson has also recorded a video guide to show you how to do this.
CONSOLE INSTRUCTIONS
- Find your console’s web browser (this can be found on the dashboard or in the console’s library under ‘applications’)
- Type Office 365 into your web browser and log in as you normally would
- On the left you will have icons for all the usual Microsoft apps (Word, Excel, OneDrive, Teams etc)
- Click on Teams to access your live lessons, or OneDrive to access your non-live lessons.
TO CREATE NEW DOCUMENTS IN ONEDRIVE:
- Open OneDrive (cloud symbol)
- Find the folder you would normally save work in and click on it (just as you would on a PC)
- Click on ‘+New’ and select the type of document you want (Word, Powerpoint etc)
- Any work done on this document will automatically save as you are working on OneDrive
- To rename the document simply click on the top left where it says ‘Document1 – Saved’ (you can also change the document’s location here)
- You can use the controller to move around the menus, but it is recommended to plug a keyboard in (USB) for typing
These browsers can be a little slow at times. Be patient. If a box appears saying it couldn’t load with options to ‘cancel’ or ‘close’ press on cancel – it will load with a little patience. Try to keep open tabs to a minimum (work on one document at a time) and close any you don’t need.
CHROMECAST:
- Plug the Chromecast into your TV (HDMI)
- Install the free Google Home app on your phone (app store)
- Follow the on-screen instructions to pair your phone with the Chromecast
- Load up the Google Home app
- Click on the device you want to use (e.g., Bedroom TV)
- Bottom left corner, click ‘Cast my screen’
- Your mobile screen will be mirrored on the TV
- You can now use all the key packages for online learning with a larger screen

If you are having trouble completing any of the work, please email your teacher. Their email address can be found in the table below:

Your teacher will give you feedback on your work once you send it.
At the end of each day, someone from school will be in touch to discuss your progress for that day. You’ll be asked what work you’ve completed, whether it has been sent to your teacher and whether you had any issues completing your work.
