German
We aim to expose our students to a broad and enriching German experience, which develops students’ language skills and knowledge, develops self- efficacy, and promotes students’ interest in the world and cultures around them. Throughout the German curriculum students will have the opportunity to use languages skills, productively (written and spoken) and receptively (reading and listening), to be able to communicate effectively in real world scenarios, practical purposes, and to share their interests and understand those of others. Students will develop their understanding of German grammar in order for them to manipulate language to share their opinions and personal interests. Students will also work towards being confident independent speakers whilst becoming knowledgeable of the culture of the German speaking world through working with authentic resources which broaden their minds and understanding of distinct cultures. Students from Y7-11 will also have invaluable experience of working with our native language assistant to further develop their linguistic skills. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities, from film screenings to off-site residentials, which provides students a rich language experience where they value the importance of language learning as well as seeing the opportunities that studying languages can bring
Curriculum Content
Assessment Summary
In KS3 (Y7-9) students will complete on average 1 assessment per half term. These assessments will test students’ grammar, vocabulary, and phonics knowledge based on what they have covered throughout the year. Students will also complete writing and speaking assessments where they will receive feedback based on their accuracy and quality of writing /speaking.
A percentage mark will be awarded and reported against a cohort average.
In KS4 (Y10-11) students will complete reading and listening assessments per theme they study. The assessments will test knowledge of the current theme as well as themes covered previously in their language learning. In addition to these students will complete GCSE style writing assessments where they will receive personalized feedback and they will be marked against GCSE marking criteria. In the summer term, Year 10 students will complete their first formal mock speaking exam which will be assessed against the GCSE mark scheme.
In KS5, students half-termly assessments based on the subject content, vocabulary and grammar covered during this time. Students will also complete writing assessments based on their film and literature studies.
Y9 Bridging Year
The Y9 German curriculum allows students to further their personal interests related to German and its importance and value in different sectors in the world. Students continue to develop their linguistic skills in relation to a wider range of themes and topics. Students will continue to improve their understanding their understating of grammar and vocabulary to allow them to be more confident communicators across a range of contexts.
