We aim to expose our students to a broad and enriching French experience, which develops students’ language skills and knowledge, develops self- efficacy, and promotes students’ interest in the world and cultures around them. Throughout the French curriculum students will have the opportunity to use languages skills, productively (written and spoken) and receptively (reading and listening), to be able to communicate effectively in real world scenarios, practical purposes, and to share their interests and understand those of others. Students will develop their understanding of French grammar in order for them to manipulate language to share their opinions and personal interests. Students will also work towards being confident independent speakers whilst becoming knowledgeable of the culture of the Francophone world through working with authentic resources which broaden their minds and understanding of distinct cultures. Students from Y7-11 will also have invaluable experience of working with our native language assistant to further develop their linguistic skills. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities, from film screenings to traditional food sampling, which provides students a rich language experience where they value the importance of language learning as well as seeing the opportunities that studying languages can bring.

Assessment Summary

MFL Assessment Summary

An explanation of how the subject is assessed, giving detail on the key areas of assessment in the subject.
In KS3 (Y7-9) students will complete half termly vocabulary tests as well as completing both a receptive (reading/listening) assessment and a productive (writing/speaking) assessment per theme they study. The assessments will test knowledge of the current theme as well as themes covered previously in their language learning. The speaking assessment will test fluency/ pronunciation and will be a role play scenario and a conversational element.
A percentage mark will be awarded and reported against a school average.
In KS4 (Y10-11) students will complete half termly vocabulary tests as well as completing both a receptive (reading/listening) assessment and a productive (writing/speaking) assessment per theme they study. These assessments will be made up of GCSE exam style questions. The assessments will test knowledge of the current theme as well as themes covered previously in their language learning.
A grade mark will be awarded based on GCSE grade descriptors and performance compared to previous grade boundaries for skill tests and a % mark will be awarded for vocabulary tests.

Y9 Bridging Year

Through the Wider Modern World curriculum students will have the opportunity to continue to study languages. They will experience different forms of literature (extracts from novels, poetry), a film study, and learn about culturally significant events which have influenced the Francophone world.

French Specialism

The Y9 French curriculum allows students to further their personal interests related to French and its importance and value in different sectors in the world. Students continue to develop their linguistic skills in relation to a wide range of themes and topics. Students will continue to improve their understanding of grammar and vocabulary to allow them to be more confident communicators across a range of contexts.
