Curriculum

Personal development exists throughout our taught curriculum. Our staff have worked hard to create explicit personal development learning opportunities throughout each subject, in each year of school, from Y7-Y13.

Staff understand that as well as the academic curriculum that must be taught, a child’s personal development is also crucial to becoming a successful, independent, and important part of the world in which they will live.

Our subject teams have carried out an audit of personal development opportunities that exist in our taught curriculum. This has helped us to identify any gaps and ensure that all students have regular experiences of high quality provision across the year groups.

SMSC: Understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others

Blues music – students learn about the origins of blues music, specifically the slave trade in America. Students experience musical expression that stems from suffering and trial. Students learn how music carries emotion and expresses feelings.

History

Enabling pupils to recognise the dangers of inappropriate use of mobile technology and social media

British Empire:

pupils look at how information can be misrepresented or altered to change people’s perspectives.

Science

Knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain

Project lesson on global warming and climate change and how differing governments respond to this challenge.

SMSC: Knowledge of, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values

Assessing the BLM. Students are taught about the historical viewpoint on the BAME community. Assessing the Holocaust. Students are taught about antisemitism.
